Screening & Panel Discussion
SFIOFF is pleased to announce a special screening of Sand Wars, winner of the 2014 SFIOFF Environment Award at the 11th Annual SFIOFF. In partnership with Green Planet Films, SFIOFF presents a special evening with French writer and director Denis Delestrac and his multi-award-winning film Sand Wars on Tuesday, January 20, 2015, at Cowell Theater at Fort Mason Center, San Francisco. Join us as we take a journey around the world to witness the devastating effects of the sand "gold rush."
See the Film, Meet the Filmmaker
After the screening, learn more about the sand issues facing the world and our own local Bay Area beaches in a panel discussion with the filmmaker.
More About Disappearing Sands
Seventy percent of the world's beaches are in decline. Entire islands are disappearing. Sand smuggling is a major factor.
With skyrocketing demand for sand as consumption and construction increases, "sand mafias" are increasingly plundering beaches and rivers for this highly prized commodity.
Sand in Daily Life
Sand has quietly infiltrated every corner of our world. It is melted and transformed into glass. It's in homes, skyscrapers, airports, bridges, and sidewalks.
Sand is also the source of silicon dioxide, a mineral used in products like:
|Dehydrated foods||Cleaning products & detergents|
A Finite Resource
Sand, that staple of seaside holidays, is seen as freely available, unlimited in supply. But as the world grows, can the available quantity meet an ever-increasing demand?
What will be the consequences of sand extraction and smuggling? How will this affect the environment and life on our planet?
See the film that has won eight awards and screened at 33 film festivals worldwide, and is the most-watched documentary on major European broadcast network ARTE.
